Animated films for a climate-friendly industry

Phase 1: Briefing and Idea

On 1 January 2022, Germany took over the rotating presidency of the G7. What exactly is the G7 presidency and how can Germany use it to protect the climate? Die Gruene Filmagentur was commissioned by WWF Germany to produce two animated films that summarise the upcoming tasks of the G7 and the climate policy demands on the G7.

As one of the largest and most experienced environmental protection organisations, WWF has been doing very important work for many years, so we were particularly pleased to support the foundation with two animated films on the G7 presidency. Since the client already had specific ideas about the films, the concept phase of the project began after just a brief briefing.

Phase 2: Concept & film production planning

A script with image ideas was already available. Our concept developer Vanouch further refined the script, always keeping the maximum length of 2×60 seconds in mind. One of the most important statements was to be: "A more climate-friendly industry is extremely important in order to limit global warming." It was immediately apparent that this was a complex topic, and reducing it to its essentials and translating it into visuals was no easy task. During this phase, the script was continuously coordinated with our illustrator Miriam to ensure feasibility and consistency. As the project had a very tight schedule, it was important to remove any potential stumbling blocks at this early stage. Thanks to our structured approach and a good schedule, this was ultimately achieved successfully.

Phase 3: Illustration

While the concept was still being finalised, our illustrator Miriam began working on the style. This meant that she sketched one of the scenes from the script in different illustration styles – completely in colour and with all the backgrounds. These test scenes were then presented to our client. This made it easy to find a suitable style. Next, we moved on to the storyboard. The scenes described in the script were worked out using simple sketches to determine the basic design of the individual films. The storyboard already gives a good idea of how the story will unfold. A particular challenge was to integrate the respective texts into the design of the scenes in such a way that they are easy to read but at the same time do not distract too much from the image content. Only after the scenes in the storyboard had been approved were they elaborated, coloured and provided with further details.

Phase 4: Animation

In the final step, Miriam set the scenes in motion (animated them) and created transitions between the scenes. Everything was then rounded off with appropriate music and sound design to support the animations aurally. The result is two modern, entertaining and informative animated films that impressed both us and the client. The films have so far achieved over 21,000 views on WWF Germany's Instagram channel.
