There is currently a growing amount of research into how formative the early years are for our entire lives. Many people have already pointed this out. But what exactly does this mean, and what is important in the early years to ensure that a child can start life happy and healthy? Filmmaker Janina Rasch joins paediatrician Dr Anna Pirker on a journey to visit young families and experts. What concerns them today? What can help parents during the challenging time with small children? When Janina herself becomes pregnant, she takes her camera with her into her everyday life and shares what she experiences with her daughter during the first year in an honest and touching way.
What do you see when you look into a child's eyes? Isn't it a moment when we remember that curiosity, vitality and pure joie de vivre? Too often we get lost in everyday life, fail to notice the gifts these little people give us, and days go by when we have hardly looked them in the eye. What a challenge it is to juggle the very different paces of work and family life. What could family life look like where this is more successful and where children do not lose these qualities that are inherent in them – their child essence?
The film explores these questions, knowing that general advice is of no use to us. It appeals less to our intellect than to our emotions. Filmmaker Janina Rasch, who became pregnant during the film project, joins paediatrician Anna Pirker on a quest. They visit young families and experts. And we experience Janina becoming a mother and finding her way in family life during her first year with her daughter Anouk.
The film was shot over seven days at various locations in Switzerland, including Interlaken, Winterthur and Bern, with a team consisting of a director, cameraman and camera assistant. Professional 4K film and lighting technology with cine lenses was used for the shoot.
